Reut – The Teenager Who Brought Life Back Home
And one Friday night at the Shabbat table, Reut suddenly heard her father laughing again with her little brothers. For a moment, she simply stopped and looked at him.
Reut was only 15 years old, but sometimes she felt much older. Their home used to be full of life. Her father would tell jokes at the Shabbat table, her mother sang while cooking, and her younger brothers ran through the house laughing. But ever since her father's younger brother was killed suddenly in a car accident, something inside their home changed.
Her father never stopped working. Every morning he still went to work, but he was no longer the same person. In the past, he always stayed for overtime so the children would never go without. If someone offered him side jobs in the evenings, he would immediately say yes. But after the tragedy, he began coming straight home, sitting silently in the corner, and shutting himself off from everyone around him.
Slowly, the family income began to shrink. There were fewer groceries, fewer outings, and much less joy in the house. Reut noticed her mother standing at the supermarket cashier over and over again, calculating every shekel. At night, she overheard quiet conversations about debts, loans, and fears about the future.
Little by little, Reut took on more responsibility at home. She prepared sandwiches for her younger brothers, helped them with homework, and put them to bed when her mother was exhausted. At school, she tried to smile, but inside she felt her heart becoming heavier every day.
What hurt her most was watching her father slowly disappear. He used to sing, laugh, and spend time with the family. Now, many evenings passed in complete silence.
But there was one small thing that gave her hope. From time to time, Reut volunteered with friends from school in activities run by Lema'an Achai.
